"Que país é esse?" : um estudo sobre o imaginário de Brasil e brasileiro em letras de música do rock nacional (1979 a 1989)

Abstract

The present study aims at underlining the national mind during the transitional period between the Military Government of Brazil and the New Republic. The definitions of Brazil, Brazilian and the other speech, which is built in national rock music lyrics that became a hit between the years 1979 and 1989, are going to be analyzed. This is a bibliographical research and the analysis method is a descriptive and interpretative one. The theoretical frame of this study is the French Discourse Analysis within the philosopher and linguist Michel Pêcheux s theoretical basis. For Pêucheux language is not merely an abstract system, but the place where ideology and the social-historical occur. Therefore, we analyzed the relations between the speeches and the practices of the Military Government about nationality issues and, at the same time, the MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) speeches which were responsible for the resistance involving the Discourse Memory the place where the senses emerge from. The main objective is to show the operation of the imaginary in which the subject recognizes himself as a Brazilian and recognizes his country, that is, how his relation with that one thing that represents him is organized, specifically how the imaginary is included in the Discursive Materiality, as well as the heterogeneity (the other) and what this represents in social-historical terms, which interests make up these representations of the country and its people, observing the memory, the process of forgetting and the resistances. At first, we are going to talk about the relations between language, ideology and speech, then a theoretical path about the concept of the imaginary is going to be followed, and at last, the antagonism s interpretation gestures which existed between the Governmental Discursive Formation and the Resistance Discursive Formation are going to be analyzed. Throughout the analysis it was possible to find a Brazilian without a place to exercise full citizenship in the very democratized country, hope has yielded up to frustration and the concept Brazil business has deconstructed as never the image of Brazil as a homeland
